A)
Before I began
filming my documentary I made sure I had my production schedules filled out and
knew what I wanted to film and how I wanted the documentary to look. This was
crucial as I only had one week to film the skiing footage which the whole of my
documentary was revolving around.
B)
My main
goal when I was in Italy was to film as much as possible, this meant that I was
filming every run and chairlift. Even if the footage was bad it was better than
having not enough footage. After I got back from Italy I checked all of the
footage and decided that it needed more than just the shots of skiing so I decided
to add 3 interviews from people who went on the ski trip with me.
C)
I decided
to create a vhs aesthetic to the documentary to give it a vintage feel. This
also makes the documentary feel nostalgic which hooks the audience and keeps
them watching. Other revisions I made to the documentary was creating an
animated title and name cards for the interviewee’s.
D)
One of the
things which I like about my documentary is the fact that I used multiple types
of cameras throughout it. It starts with a cassette camcorder, When I was
skiing I used a gopro, and when I interviewed people I used a digital camera. I
also used a boom mic for the interview, and a light. All of these pieces of
equipment helped not only with the outcome of my documentary but with my skills
for the future as I filmed and recorded the sound all on my own.
E)
The
aesthetic of my documentary has changed quite a bit from how I originally
planned it to be. The footage has been edited a lot by adding noise, changing
the colour balance and adding a border to all the footage. This transferred the
footage from what looked like a holiday movie or a vlog to a documentary.
F)
Due to the
content of my documentary I only had one week to film my footage. This meant I had
to keep to my proposed production process and all other production docs. There wasn’t
room for error when filming in Italy so I made sure that I recharged the gopro batteries
overnight, had a spare on me, and that I wiped my SD card before I left.
G)
One piece of
equipment that would have improved my documentary massively would have been a gimbal.
This would have made my skiing footage 100x smoother and meant that I wouldn’t have
had to slow down and cut up the clips so much. If I was in Italy for a month it
would have helped a lot as well as I would have had free reign with the
footage.
